The following are excerpts from an Anger Management Workbook developed by the Centre for Clinical Intervention. I use these concepts with individuals who have a low threshold of distress when their needs are conflicted.
Such individuals are prone to becoming angry and aggressive rather than assertively communicating their needs with others in an appropriate manner.
There are many reasons anger arises in communication. However, it often has its roots in our socialisation and/or our beliefs about self and others.
And then again, transient anger can be an issue for individuals with mounting everyday stressors that arise. Essentially, we need to be conscious of these stressors but mindful of our interaction with others to ensure we engage in civil and respectful conversations, be it in the workplace or home.
